Lucy Joy Oldfields work is largely driven by her love of eye catching objects and surface decoration. She tends to enjoy herself most when working in fine detail and trying to approach drawing with an uninhibited and non mechanical technique. Like us, Lucy is all about the charms of hand drawn wobbly lines.

Ryan Robinsons got his fingers in all the pies

We spied David Ryan Robinsons work for the first time a couple of years ago whilst still at Salford Uni. We were running our Cheap Affair art and craft fairs at Islington Mill and Ryan held a stall with some other students selling their work, wares and home made cookies.

Ryan has been on the illustration / graphic design scene for a couple of years now and has racked up quite a few impressive projects including work for becks beers, the bbc, tba magazine, the Cornerhouse and Afflecks Palace.

He has also had exhibitions all around the manchester area, including font bar (oxford road), odder bar (oxford road), nexus art café and again Islington mill (salford). He has also recently illustrated the “laugh your socks off” celebrity joke book, released for sports relief.

As if all of that wasn't enough to keep you interested, Ryan is also in the process of finishing off the album cover and a small illustration booklet for Allie Moss' new album, Late Bloomer, which will be available instore from around mid-April.

Stacie Swift and her animal parade

Stacie Swift is a freelance illustrator living and working in London and is also a full time student in her final year. We came across her illustrations on trusty old Facebook and just couldn't help but share her magical work with you all.
Stacie enjoys drawing animals with human personalities, the more ridiculously proportioned or sickeningly cute the animal is the more desperate she is to draw it.

Stacie completes her drawings by hand and then whacks them into the computer to clean and edit digitally. Her work is just plain fun and can be enjoyed by anyone with eyes. All of her illustrations are filled to the brim with light hearted humour, bright bubblegum colours and lots of pattern.

Her most recent project is a range of illustrated greetings cards which are available from her Etsy shop here and she is soon to start illustrating a rather magical children's book. Also something else to look forward to from Stacie is a series of black and white animal portraits that will be exhibited in Hoxton mid February.

Look at that little pooch, definite winner of the next Crufts.

Kristin Farr can brighten anyones day

Kristin works in any medium she can get her sticky fingers on. Painting, sculpture, textiles, and video are her main jams. In her art practice she thinks about nostalgia, humor, comfort, magic, color psychology, and positivism.

She has a neurologically-based condition called grapheme-color synaesthesia, which creates a complex relationship between her brain, color, and words, and has a significant influence on her work.

These bags are just too amazing! Gone are the nervous times waiting at luggage collection in the airport wondering if you're about to pick up your own bag or get clobbered for stealing.

Fun facts about Kristin:

Most recently she made a chair with arms for hugging, and a SharkBoard from kristin farr on Vimeo.

She has an amazing day job in which she has to interview and write about artists all day long, lucky girl!

She lives in Richmond, CA with her art partner in crime Jeff Meadows.

She is a regular guest artist on FreeCrappyPortraits.com where she draws exclusively in crayon (a girl after our own heart)

We caught up with the super talented Clare Dutton to chat about her handmade jewellery and accessories range Dolly Cool.

EYC: What is Dolly Cool all about?
Clare: Dolly Cool is inspired by my love of Rockabilly, Tattoos and the 50's and was created as I wanted to make affordable yet cool jewellery and accessories for people like myself.

EYC: We love that your jewels and accessories have an the edge on others working in the same field as yourself, tell us about it.
Clare: I hand make and finish each and every one of my products personally. Everything on the Dolly Cool website is unique and original, is not mass produced and is made with care by me.
Unlike a lot of other companies selling this type of product, I don't 'buy in' things to sell on, I make it all myself. I like to think that this is my Unique Selling Point in a very heavily saturated market.

EYC: So, not only do you make amazing one of a kind jewellery but you have your fingers in other pies too!?
Clare: As well as jewellery, I also own a professional embroidery machine, for which I design and make the embroideries myself. This has progressed to a small clothing line, which I sell exclusively at shows at present, and some pieces on ebay."

"Hello You Creatives" are working on a newspaper project that is going to go out to a heap of agencies around England that use illustrators or represent them and are looking for submissions.
The deadline they need to meet in order to get print is Friday 6th August. Pretty soon I know, so theres no room for dilly dallying!

It is going to be printed in black and white so they can afford to get plenty made up, then if it's successful can get some of these agencies on board with funding see about taking it up a notch next time around.

The image can be no bigger than A4, black and white, 300dpi and in TIFF, Hi-res jpeg or Photoshop EPS.

Big Hair Small Dress sell Mens and womens vintage clothing from 30's -90's including footwear and the odd bit of shiny jewellery.

Kate Buffton is a third year student at Salford University and a book artist, transforming old unwanted books into a new and innovative designs. The pages are cut and folded to create sculptures from the books. Each sculpture is similar yet diffierent to the one before.

The art project Cheap started as an independent zine run by artists Tommy Eugene Higson and Nikki Marie Jackson showcasing emerging and established talents in art, illustration, design, photography, literature and other creative and visual practices. Cheap has been involved and represented in various events and exhibitions internationally and is distributed internationally.  As artists we work and exhibit both individually and collaboratively and our work addresses various subjects and themes with several constants; accessibility, relevance and aesthetics. Cheap is a reflection of these abiding concerns and an ongoing project to describe and detail developments in regards to the broader visual and creative cultural landscape in the form of products, exhibitions and events and critical writing.

Ashley Fauguel  has just recently graduated from Northumbria University. An illustrator/ creator of pretty things to brighten your day! She has a rather strange talent of making pretty people look freaky which crazily enough makes me smile :) Ashley has just started work on her first zine which is frigging exciting, its called "All my Heroes are Weirdos" named after a club night that made her giggle! She likes to have her finger in a number of arty pies and loves experimenting that’s why she's currently learning to knit so expect to see some of my haphazard knitted creations!

So this is what we are interested in - what we like - when art and illustration become indistinguishable from one another, and we love Olaf Hajek , this is his first monograph and it is wonderful.

There are a wide variety of commercial and some personal works displayed here and they are inseparable, like Burgerman his work is so strong and unique that there is no need for artistic compromise. This is also a testament to "the artist" and the progression of art; a balancing and acceptance of both personal and commercial project being equally valid.

Unlike Burgerman however his work is a much more traditional easel painting practice, which is by no means a bad thing as his canvases are magical curiosities imbued with a profound knowledge and reference to African tribal art, Latin folk art, Japanese woodblock printmaking, Surrealism and even poster art.

There are also countless contemporary painters who Hajek can easily be alined with such as Ellen Gallagher, Laura Owens or Chris Ofili with their postmodern sampling and referencing indiscriminately combined with an outstanding draughtsman and application of paint, however his commercial projects and truly bridging the hi/lo gap set him apart.

There are not enough words to describe reading one of Olaf Hajek's paintings; folklore, myth and fantasy can play a big part of the decryption, but so can film, music and popular culture and again so can personal experience, which seems to be the key because after the fifth, tenth or twentieth viewing you are still discovering something new.

Cheap are holding their fifth creative fair at Islington Mill in Salford on Sunday 4th April (Easter Sunday).

We have over 20 exciting stalls ranging from beautiful trinkets and vintage clothes, contemporary painting, handmade jewelry, original photography, plush toys, illustrations, zines, cards, tasty cakes, printed tees to salt and pepper pots. Everything you would ever need all under one roof!

We will also have some pretty exciting bands playing through out the day and there is an on site vegetarian cafe. (We will be posting a list of bands/times nearer the time)

From the start EdgyCute is friendly and relatable, it wants to be liked, which is not to say it is going to play nice, it is mean and it will make fun and it will rip piss out of the hand that feeds.

So what is EdgyCute? Well it is the work of certain contemporary artists and illustrators whose work comes from a marriage of obsession with graffiti, neo-pop, j-pop, various subcultures, mass; media, technology and consumerism, art history... and cartoons. Two fantastic essays and an introduction from Harry Saylor (of the Orbit Gallery) really appraise and contextualize contemporary image making, thus terming EdgyCute. Godfathers and components of the movement include Mark Ryden, Tim Biskup and the Clayton Brothers (just to give you a starting point).

Complementing the globalized, superflat subject matter and poppy, playful aesthetic the book also looks at the influence of illustrators on fine artists and vise-versa. It's something few will readily approach or even concede as the idea either muddies fine art with something so commercial and public or contradicts illustration's purely functional nature. Looking at artistic achievements in terms of commissions and exhibitions as well as auteurship and theory is refreshing and it sets it aside from other (still great) books such as The Upset and the recent Hi-Fructose Collected Edition.

Now with such diverse work in terms of both style and content it could have very easily resulted in an incredibly mixed up book, but it is broken up into broad chapters so it is digestible. This does not so much mean the chapters present work as generic, just a case of enabling an understanding of context and relating. For example: Disney Poison shows how evil is forgiven with an innocent, cute face but still contains a wide variety of artists such as Kathie Olivas and her freakishly deformed children and evil disney animal friends complete with halloween death masks, Brandi Milne and her sickly sweet bubblegum food critters and Nicoletta Ceccoli and her mysterious melancholy young girls. Other chapters include Evil Seduction, Mid-Century Nostalgia, Heroes and Surreal.

In the process of exploring this book I discovered several artists who I feel are of particular note who I had not previously uncovered (as well as a few old favourites). Ryan Heshka has been a favourite for a while, his paintings scream classic sci-fi, presenting small stories complete with dialogue, quotes or slogans reminiscent of comics or cartoons and distressed to give a true vintage feel. Gary Taxli's creatures are quirky, weird, vulgar, idiotic little things that bring a smile, reminiscent of early screen print design works on found objects. Greg Gossell's seemingly torn-up billboard paintings are laden with pop images and text taken straight from the collective conscious and rendered in a whole rainbow of colours. Brian Taylor's sci-fi-cartoon hybrid screen prints are thoroughly entertaining in their immediate simplicity and quirkiness. Gerd Dagne's paintings draw you in at first glance with their skill and initial recognizing appeal then disarm you with their subtle complexity and darkly comedic and reflective quality. So I don't go on forever I will finish with comic book artist and illustrator Kevin Scalzo whose layered paintings contain samples from an infinite numbers of image, line and mark sources and belong to a very exciting discourse in painting of sampling and creating and existing somewhere between figuration and abstraction.

All in all this is another wonderful book introducing new image making and its context (and there aren't many or enough). It is thoroughly readable (and understandable), intelligent and fucking fun.

We are making our first book looking at the influence of Art Nouveau on contemporary image making practices and Art Nouveau inspired work and are looking for contributors.

Art Nouveau has had particular resonance over the last century affecting the development of fashion design and architecture and up until today and can still be seen today in contemporary design and illustration, fine art cross-overs, business art, lowbrow, poster art and most areas of fashion. It is however - we think - something which is frequently overlooked and want to bring it back into consciousness!

So we are looking for artists, illustrators, designers, photographers, writers and any other kind of image makers help us make the book by sending us some images they think would be good contributions. They need to be a5 (and please account for bleed), colour or black and white, 300dpi, jpegs and please send 1-4 submissions. Anyone chosen for the book will receive a free copy and we are hoping to stock it nationwide (UK) with international posting possibilities and a release towards the end of summer.

I won't beat around the bush; this is the illustration book I have been waiting for. If you're an illustrator, hell, if you're and artist, image maker or image enthusiast you need to own this book. And this is why.

For a start it breaches the all-to-familiar format of so many illustration compilations of late which simply buzz: how playful, how creative, how pretty of illustration. That is not to say there isn't some fantastic and diverse makers. Some of my favourites are Barbara Ann Gomez's vibrant images with their vivid colours, intricacy and a real feel of the handmade, as similarly I enjoyed Hannah Warren but with more of a delicacy. I poured over Jess Wilson's works, filled to bursting point with characters, animals, icons, contraptions, text and countless pop and cultural references. My mind boggled at the complex creation process in Kerry Lemon's images that combine detailed drawing (in various media), watercolour and digital manipulation. I loved the magic in the images of Yoko Furusho, the muted palette and the J-pop feel made digitally crisp. And the ultra clean, pattern-filled, colour intelligent compositions of Karolin Schnoor are particularly impressive. The list really does go on and words are no good but check out some of their blogs. Amelia wanted the best from her artists; so she got it.

What makes this best though is that Amelia set a brief for the project tackling a very current global political issue. Now I did have some initial concerns when I read the sub-title 'featuring renewable technologies to prevent catastrophic climate change', as this could so easily have become an overly-romanticised rant condemning the world unless; we the people, take charge, and love our planet, and yader, yader, yader. But the fact of the matter is that there is no overbearing moral agenda forced onto you, just truly informative articles about alternative energy sources that we could consider for the future, and it's delivered in a thoroughly entertaining way. I genuinely came out of the experience feeling more knowledgeable and dare I say: optimistic! I felt I saw real potential in the technology developed by Sky WindPower and thought the inner city car park vegetable farms, circuit board cities and quarried landscapes reformed with greenhouses were really quirky, innovative, intelligent ideas.

The Amelia's Anthology of Illustration project has been a great idea from the word go and I've not even mentioned how well the illustrations and text compliment each other, giving you such a mental picture of how these technologies work and how things may look in the future. Not to mention the fact that it acts as a great reference to some fantastic illustrators- emerging and established- and really gives you insight into working practices, experiences and of course much talk about self-promotion and motivation! This is the illustration book we've been waiting for.

Interview

What made you decide to do this project, did you decide that you wanted to make an illustration book first or did you get the idea for the brief first? (It really worked, I feel much wiser for it!)

I suppose the idea all came together at once; I've worked with illustrators a lot and knew I wanted to make a book that featured illustration, but I also knew that I didn't want it to be like any other illustration book, ie a banal 'best of' collection that said nothing about the context of illustration now. I am interested in the power of illustration to harness the imagination so somewhere along the line I thought it might be possible to combine my plans for a book with a way to show us how a possible alternative future might look. I knew I wanted to make a book that would educate at the same time as inspire, so when I found all these crazy, inventive but perfectly feasible alternative energy plans that aren't really being talked about anywhere they seemed like the perfect subject matter. And then the idea just grew organically from there.

Is there any of the renewable technologies that particularly gripped you? Sky WindPower's Flying Electric Generator sounds like a winner to me!

Well, no bias obviously, but I am sure my dad's Loose Cannon Wavepower idea is brilliant (even though he still won't tell me precisely how it works for fear of losing his right to a patent). I love the Sky WindPower technology too, probably because it just seems so fabulously insane. I think that all the flying kite technologies really grab the imagination- for instance I particularly like the KiteGen idea too- the concept of kites filling the sky to produce power just seems so very out there and unlikely that it might just happen. We never know how the future will look, and that is why it holds such an allure for artists and visionaries. There is the opportunity to be so very creative in the interpretation of the subject matter.

I know it's hard to choose but do you have any favourites amongst the illustrators you've chosen for this book?

The successful partnerships that I have formed with some of the illustrators featured in the Anthology of Illustration would definitely mark them out as my favourites, because it's really important to be able to work with art direction in a successful manner. Of course you'd have to ask the individual illustrators but I feel fairly certain that most of the ones I worked most closely with would agree that the work that we produced collaboratively was that much stronger. I am particularly pleased with the cover of the book, which was produced with Scottish student Louise McLennan, who is an absolute natural and a complete original, despite never having trained as an illustrator. She is going to be very successful. I also worked closely with another Scottish girl, Lesley Barnes, who I think it is fair to say I pushed beyond her comfort boundaries by asking her to work with lots of colour for the endpapers (it took quite a long time to get those right) and I think that she's brilliantly talented, particularly as a typographer. Mia Marie Overgaard has been an absolute diamond to work with over the past year, helping me to produce iconographic artwork for Climate Camp and capable of producing such amazing beautiful delicate illustrations. Others that stand out are Leona Clarke, again for her ability to produce fantastic work under tight art direction, Justin Wallis for the sheer genius of his vision, Thereza Rowe for her quirky papercutting and cheery disposition, Abi Daker for her truly original style and again her willingness to work to a tight schedule and art direction. There are many others - Japanese illustrators Sachiko and Yoko Furusho produce very different work that is just so immensely imaginative in it's interpretation of subject matter, and Liv Bargman has a fabulously creative way of looking at things. I am sure I could go on.... in fact I've thought of several others already, but I'll stop there!

You had an exhibition to coincide with the release of the book at Concrete Hermit with several artists from the book collaborating, is this something you would like to do more of, more curating?

In an ideal world yes, but it takes a lot of time and energy for me to do extracurricular projects, and the major limiting factor on what I can achieve is how much I can actually do on my own. Most of my time is spent dealing with the very unglamourous aspects of running a small business: coping with admin for the website and book, managing interns, and sorting out production and distribution. I don't want to give myself more than I can cope with as I have enough of a tendency to do this as it is! For now I want to concentrate on what I know I need to do to keep all my current projects afloat and viable, and also hopefully give myself a bit of space to breathe as I feel as though I have worked myself into the ground over the past few years.

So what's next for you now, what's the next project?

Well, it's January, which means it's sort-out-my-tax time; boooooring, but that's the nature of running your own business. It will probably take me several weeks to collate and sort out my paperwork even though every year I swear to myself that I will be more organised. It never happens. I also need to concentrate on getting the book distributed abroad, finding PR opportunities, checking up on sales in the UK, and chasing up unpaid invoices dating back to the magazine... lots of fun stuff like that. After that I am going to try and concentrate on making the blog as good as it can be, which will mean addressing ways in which I can make it more sustainable so that is can continue into the future successfully (as it makes no income at present) and writing for it a lot more myself. Sadly, I also need to sort out the mess in my house - 6 years of running a magazine has accumulated into toppling piles of back issues, lookbooks, postcards, boxes, cd promos and so on, so it looks more like a junk shop/warehouse than the lovely home it used to be. Then I might tackle my next book idea.... which could involve looking at how successful sustainable communities come about, but the idea is yet an unformulated plan. Tempted though I am to jump right in at the deep end again I very much need to sort out the basics of my life first! I'll post something on my website as soon as I've decided what I'm going to do so watch this space...

Interview with Lisa Hassell from inkygoodness

Tommy- Right then, first question, will start with an easy one. How would you describe what you are doing with inkygoodness and what are your aims?

Lisa- Inkygoodness started life as a small art show in Bristol back in 2008. Michelle and I were both keen to do something creative together and a show felt like a great idea. We were lucky to sell a bit of work and enjoyed the experience so a group show felt like a natural progression. We were excited about showcasing our work alongside established artists and organising a show was the quickest and easiest way to get our name out there. Inkygoodness 2 showcased artwork by 15 illustrators and we were very lucky to get talented local artists on board such as Andy Council which really helped elevate what we were doing. Following our success in Bristol we hosted 'Wonderland' in our home town of Birmingham last September; exhibiting work by over 25 artists each with their own unique style. We learned that working as a professional illustrator can be very isolating, especially for newcomers who may not know many others in the profession and so inkygoodness has evolved to meet this need by creating group shows where everyone can get involved in curating, selling and promoting their artwork in a professional art show; essential skills to survive as an illustrator.

Tommy- Yeah, that's great, I think that is one of the good things about what you do too, that you do get emerging artists together with more established artists so there's more exposure for the newer artists and that in turn a new audience turns out. And the more established artists see what new makers are doing (and what the competition is!). So next question is there anything else you would like to do with the project, do you have plans to work in any new directions or anything you want to experiment or play around with? I know you'd mentioned the possibility of a print show for instance.

Lisa- Yes! There are lots of things we would like to do with inkygoodness... continue to build on the foundations of our exhibitions, organise more events - maybe a smaller touring show. We'd love to take inkygoodness abroad to Berlin or L.A and involve more overseas artists, but for now our focus is very much UK based talent. We're currently looking for a suitable venue for a show in London next year, tossing ideas about for a theme and the format it may take - we're interested in creating a 3D 'walk through' installation, possibly involving animators.   We’d love to do a print project in the future, inviting submissions and cherry picking the strongest entries for a printed book. We're keen to showcase creative talent and continue to support our creative friends as they embark on their freelance careers; self-promotion is very important in that respect. We have a strong name and brand identity and are fortunate to be in the strong position of steadily gaining a name for ourselves - its a very exciting time for us, the only difficult bit is deciding which direction to take next!

Tommy- That all sounds cool and I suppose part of the fun is having all that choice! I got particularly excited at the prospect of a walk though installation, I think it would work well with the artists and be something real magical and kinda worlds which you can explore and properly get involved in are always big fun! A book/catalogue would be super nice too, I think when people go to image shows they tend to want to take them all back with them and especially with some of the artists you've exhibited so far! 
So what kinds of artists/makers (or anyone else for that matter) inspire you and are you interested in? Obviously there's the people who you've worked and exhibited with so far; Steve Rack, Simon Corry, Gemma Correll Felt Mistress for instance but is there anyone else you're liking at the moment?

Lisa- On a personal level painters such as Kelly Tunstall, Gary Baseman and Souther Salazar inspire me, their work is part illustration, part character art; creating beautifully weird wonderlands, strange landscapes and odd characters who occupy them. I love the idea of creating a narrative through a series of paintings or objects as part of a large installation, and this is the kind of work I aspire towards.  I have huge respect for illustrators too, and I recently attended an exhibition by Croatian artist Yellena James which was fantastic. Adam Hancher and Jack Hudson are incredibly talented illustrators & animators, and have recently executed a music video for Tigers That Talked. Remarkably, they are both still studying and I am really looking forward to seeing how their work develops!

Tommy- It is daunting isn’t it, I remember when we were studying and started Cheap we thought we were doing dead good, then started coming across loads of college kids putting out their own publications, exhibiting and even starting their own clothes brands! It’s good though, I admire people like that, and I suppose it kicks us up the arse a bit too!

So yeah I think that gives us a good idea of what informs you and what you are doing with inkygoodness but I’ve just one more question. I suppose it’s not really a question as to ask quite broadly if you had any other thoughts about image making you wanted to share; any positive or negative comments? Any issues you think people should be conscious of when making? Anything you and Michelle would like to see for inkygoodness?

Lisa- I think it's incredibly important to research, and gather ideas before creating artwork, and it's great to look at other artists for inspiration. However, it's essential to look at a variety of areas for ideas; nature, architecture, music, theatre, literature, to really think about the context of your work. Its no good to just look at other illustrators; if you want to give your work weight and depth, research is imperative. Artists who like to experiment and mix things up, work with different materials and let their ideas evolve and mature, often produce very engaging work and we strive to work with artists whose style is constantly evolving.

Kate Bufton I am a third year student at Salford University and I am a book artist, I transform old unwanted books into a new and innovative designs. Helen Littler After a successful career in fashion Helen found that her mis-spent childhood involving far too much fuzzy felt caught up with her. Appliqued tea-cosies that straddle the gap between Alice Coopers domestic arrangements and The Little House on the Prairie, lavender bags and hankies that Holly Hobbie would kill for and a 'Disco Nativity' range of fuzzy felts that prove Helen really should get out more. Completely useless products, but strangely desirable...
ILK Collective Lora Avedian, Laura Gee, and Alexandra Humphreys are three members from the collective ‘ILK’. ILK is a group of people who work in multiple disciplines across Manchester. We aim to support and encourage creativity amongst emerging artists and designers. Previously successful events we have organised include gigs for a broad range of music, with screenings of experimental films and animations. Alongside this we sold handmade merchandise. We work individually and collaborate to create design based products in 2D, textiles, 3D-tactile, illustration and animation. As a collective we would like this stall to be a platform for us to sell hand printed t-shirts, bags, one off prints, tapes, badges and zines.

Kate Alexandra Mcleish is a Manchester based illustrator/artist/designer that specialises in portraiture. She also draws vintage sewing notions and objects that are found visually beautiful. She loves fashion illustration and doing drawing studies from old photographs and is inspired by the past and present. Kate will have bright handmade jewelry- with paper, glass, porcelain & wooden beads, fimo brooches, illustrations, postcards, screen- prints and handmade cards also. Some of the stock will be Christmas themed merchandise. Kate will be sharing a stall with Freyia Lilian Porteous who will be making handmade cards, illustrations & pretty accessories for the stall.

Lauren Ball and Andrew Orton have been busy making some Christmas treats such as handmade cards, salt dough decorations and are also working on some collaborative limited edition festive prints down at the studio. Andrew has a wide range of canvases in different sizes and subject matter that he wishes to sell in both oils and acrylic. He also has a variety of life drawings which will available framed or unframed. After recently being commissioned for Channel M’s Zeitgeist, Andrew has lots of work to clear out of the studio so there is room to film so prices will be competitive and there will be lots to choose from. Lauren has been working on some handmade jewellery pieces. she has a variety glass and vintage bead bracelets in a wide range of colours. Some are extra special with semi precious stones or handmade beads. She will also have some charm bracelets and necklaces handmade from vintage charms, brooches and old fashioned keys.
David Procter Working in pen and ink and colouring digitally David explores the humorous but darker side of life and he states his influences as the likes of Ralph Steadman, David Hughes and Tim Burton to name but a few. With a broad subject range he is able to adapt to many projects whilst consistently maintaining a fresh perspective with his own personal stamp firmly rooted within his work. He will be around for the day selling his inky treats for you all.

Sorry for the late bulletin this week, we wanted the new issue out before we did it but the printer has been playing us up so it looks like a Wednesday release now but it’s a good one, if you didn’t already know the line-up is as follows:

So we’ve kept mentioning that Cheap zine is going to change so here is a little more info on that. Firstly the zine will not be changing as we had previously considered, it will continue to run as it has been doing as a lo-fi bi-monthly publication with some alterations, which will be announced at a later date.
What we are going to start doing is releasing books periodically and we are looking for contributors for the first one now! We want our books to be a little more than displaying new work; we have the zine and the flickr gallery for that. We are introducing themes, but quite specific ones so that the development of certain practices and critical theory can be examined and brought to wider audiences. We want creatives for each book both familiar and representative of the theme addressed as well as creatives who wouldn’t normally work a certain way or with certain themes to really expand the subject. We also want work to be made specifically to be premiered in the books to make them that bit more special. The first theme we are going to address is: Fashion, Beauty and Art Nouveau. Submissions should be A5, black and white, portrait, 300dpi (deadline to be set). We ask for 1-4 submissions and you can email us at:

In more news A Cheap Affair our creative fair at Islington Mill in Salford is to be a monthly event, taking place on the first Sunday of every month (apart from January which will be the second) times tbc.

So we are looking for people to be involved for the first new event (6th December). We ask for proposals no more than one side of a4 and a few images or a web link so we can see your work. We don't want intense essays we just want to know what you do. We want designers, illustrators, artists, clothes makers etc. we want a wide variety! We will let you know if you are successful either way. The deadline is 8th November and if you are successful you will be alloted a 2m x 2m space for your stall, you must bring you own table (we simply do not have supply) and will have to pay £5 for use of your space (you keep all your profits). inkygoodness 3: Wonderland Review

So I enter the gallery and my senses overload, I spot a tree with multicoloured leaves crushing a poor bird superhero/villain, spilling his Wonderland pills (Rainbow Drops) over the floor, the DJ's instrumental beats sound out across the room, I turn around and people are chalking away at one of the walls; characters, pattern and words encompass everything whilst one of the artists Moot is painting and doodling a board installation nearby, not until I am almost on top of it do I notice the goodies stall with books, prints, posters, t-shirts, zines and toys, my mind must be elsewhere, maybe it's the film crew, or maybe it's the drawings, inks, prints, and paintings of animals, people, cartoons and creatures that cluster around, and down every wall, and the space is huge, this is going to be fun.

Wonderland is the third exhibition staged by inkygoodness (illustrators Lisa Hassell and Michelle Turton) who work to provide a platform for emerging and established illustrators, artists, designers and crafters to exhibit together creating networking and professional development opportunities. It also thus works as an instrument to chronicle a fairly new movement of contemporary image makers; showing new work and innovations from new people, how established makers are developing and their influence on new practices.

One of the things that first hits you looking around the show is the familiarity you feel, the sense that you've seen people like George Mitchell and Rainbow Donkeys somewhere before, and you probably have; on flyers and posters, in magazine and comics, in shops, the list goes on. The self promotion of these makers is key to their renown and takes many forms from obvious influences like Keith Haring, Takashi Murakami and David Shrigley. What is important is how few of these practitioners seem to draw any kind of differentiation between their illustrative and design practices and their gallery work. It is not something which develops with their practice it is a given, why should a design for someone dictate not working like yourself and so why therefore should working with global brands be a bad thing?

The show is filled with such a wide variety of gems and jewels that there is something to entertain and enthrall everyone. Felt Mistress contributes some crazy half-bred animal characters with Jonathan Edwards' painting accompaniments. Steve Rack's characters represent something of a more fruity yet somehow more human set of Mr Men and Women. A giant wall painting from David Shillinglaw covers half the end wall and combines illustrational and graffiti techniques to create a large fellow filled and surrounded with pattern and obscure cultural references from cLOUDDEAD and Sole to Milk and Big Foot, a great analogy for this movement.

Other stand-outs include Lisa Hassell and Kate Hindley and their intricate, colour filled, patternful worlds. Simon Wild and Mark Wilkinson and their new art historical Cubist, Mexican, African, graffiti, design, illustration works. Moot's incorporation of graffiti into a more traditional painting practice and it actually working and coffee stain painted portraits from Adi Gilbert carried out with fantastic execution. Not to mention Gemma Correll who is always entertaining and Juan Salas' ink drawings and one particular work depicting a frog and young girl playing leapfrog.

It is unfortunate that the show is plagued by some nagging annoyances. One thing that stands out is some over-reliance on tired source material such as Super Mario backdrops, clouds, arrows, buildings and cities. Like Micropop the work is still the same quirky, vivid, electric work that excited you in the first place but in places it seems a little stale. There is still life in these icons and symbols however as Simon David Mills demonstrates, but innovation is required.

It is also a shame how some work imitates others work, Jon Burgerman and David Shrigley being the main victims of this. Showing influence is one thing but replication does not continue any kind of critical debate and therefore does not develop a movement or continue and allow for new conversation.

Other problems are minor, it would have been nice to see text and installation have a bit more presence and an animation or two wouldn't have gone a miss. I also feel the range of subjects could have poked somewhere a bit more beyond the aesthetic. The other minor problem is the lack of professional presentation of some work, crumpled paper and colour print outs on poor quality paper is not of a professional standard but understandably for some practitioners this is a first time exhibiting and like I said, these problems are minor.

Overall this is a great, great show, there is some fantastic and important work from some established and new makers and this movement is still in its early days so there is more to come, I don't think I will be disappointed and I can't see how anyone could leave this exhibition without a smile on their face.

Call for proposals... "A Cheap Affair"

Cheap are putting on an art/craft/illustration/design/fashion/anything else creative fair at Islington Mill in Salford on Sunday 6th December and are looking for proposals for stalls now!

We are not looking for massive intense essays, one side of a4 should suffice and half a dozen images to give an idea of what you (want to) do. We like things that look nice, we are all about aesthetics, accessibility and relevance. We also like people who have things to sell, we like products and we like consuming! These are not a must but it is up to you.

Don't let it be a daunting task, we just want to get an idea of what you do and what you would do with your stall/space so all applications will be considered.

Each successful applicant will be asked to pay £5 for use of their space (and no commissions will be taken) which is to be payed on the day of the event and all applicants will be notified if they are or aren't successful. Each space will be approximately 2m x 2m (give or take), or the size of a regular sized market stall fold-up table with room behind enough for a chair, for stock and to eat your lunch. No equipment, tables or chairs will be supplied so come well prepared, also their is only approximately 30 spaces so get back to us soon!!

Issue 8 will be out soon! This issue will have work from Hannah Rowlands, Elle Teague and the first works of a two-parter from Mario Kolaric!!

Also we have a give away to the first half dozen customers of issue 8 who will win a copy of the new book from Michael Dhillon: The Cuckoo Parchment and the Dyke to promote his new nano fiction project, more on that soon along with a review of the book online.

Beth Barlow
Beautiful Things is an art piece which aims to look at the value of objects and ask questions like whether they gain more value if selected and artistically treated by an artist. A collection of boxed pieces will be available to look at and, maybe, secretly bid on. Bids will be successful not just on their monetary value but also on what the buyers intention for the work is. As an artist Beth Barlow's work focuses as much on process as it does on product and the exhibiting of the work at this event asks the viewer to become part of the valuation process.

Cheap
Cheap started as an independent zine run by artists Tommy Eugene Higson and Nikki Marie Jackson showcasing emerging and established talents in art, illustration, design, photography, literature and other creative and visual practices. Cheap has been involved and represented in various events and exhibitions internationally and is distributed internationally.

As artists we work and exhibit both individually and collaboratively and our work addresses various subjects and themes with several constants; accessibility, relevance and aesthetics. Cheap is a reflection of these abiding concerns and an ongoing project to describe and detail developments in regards to the broader visual and creative cultural landscape in the form of products, exhibitions and events and critical writing.

Victoria Rangayah
I was always `drawn` to art but only gained courage to paint during my studies as a fashion designer. I took my knowledge of fashion and textiles and applied it to my artistic projects. Which included garments made out of paper and the use of interesting textures and mediums in my art.

Living in Africa, enabled me to see the world from a different perspective and in different colours. I admired the African landscape, which is kept alive in my memory, and from which I draw my inspiration. The experience to live in such an inspiring country broadened my horizons and developed me, creatively, as an artist. My work often portrays memories of my life there and the emotions that I have experienced...

Elle Teague
Elle is an illustrator based in Leeds. Her Interests lie in arts, crafts, creatures and nature. She takes inspiration from her everyday life, television and snippets of overheard conversations. Her work focuses mainly on capturing brief moments in time and her humorous, intriguing view on the world creates interesting and unique illustrations.

Elle will be transforming herself into a human vending machine, where you can choose from a party hat, custom illustrated badge of your choice or you can take a risk and choose a surprise. She will also be running a stall containing lots of curious goodies such as hand screen printed illustrations, soft toys, cushions and ceramics all incorporating her unique playful style. Call for proposals... "A Cheap Affair"

Cheap are putting on an art/craft/illustration/design/fashion/anything else creative fair at Islington Mill in Salford on Saturday 26th September and are looking for proposals for stalls now!

We are not looking for massive intense essays, one side of a4 should suffice and half a dozen images to give an idea of what you (want to) do.

As always, as with everyone else, we are looking for creative, original ideas, but we will let you know that we like things that look nice, we are all about aesthetics, accessibility and relevance. We also like people who have things to sell, we like products and we like consuming! These are not a must but it is up to you.

Don't let it be a daunting task, we just want to get an idea of what you do and what you would do with your stall/space so all applications will be considered.

Each successful applicant will be asked to pay £5 for use of their space (and no commissions will be taken) which is to be payed on the day of the event and all applicants will be notified asap if they are or aren't successful. Each space will be approximately 2.5m x 2.5m (give or take), or the size of a regular sized market stall fold-up table with room behind enough for a chair, for stock and to eat your lunch. No equipment, tables or chairs will be supplied so come well prepared, also their is only approximately 20 spaces so get back to us soon!!
